Cyclone Idai Relief

Mozambique and Malawi

Water for Life

Emergency Appeal: An estimated 1,500 people have been infected with cholera following the deadly cyclone that hit the countries of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Cyclone Idai has claimed the lives hundreds and has left 1.85 million in need of emergency humanitarian aid. HHRD launched its "Cyclone Idai Relief Fund" to provide emergency relief items of food, shelter, water and medicine through our HHRD Africa team in Kenya, who traveled to Southern Malawi and Beira, Mozambique for needs assessment and aid distribution.

The devastation of Cyclone Idai in Beira can't be explained in words or captured in photos. It is heartbreaking to see what has happened to this poor country. There is more need here than we can imagine; I have seen it with my own eyes. -Br. Musa Ibrahim HHRD Africa Country Manager

The cyclone made landfall causing widespread damage; relief workers and survivors are slowly getting a glimpse of the devastation of this storm. With restricted access to some areas and the threat of cholera, humanitarian relief workers are facing limitations in their work.

HHRD Africa Manager Br. Musa Ibrahim and Disaster Relief Coordinator Br. Younas Yousaf visited a camp in Blantyre Southern Malawi to assist in recuperation efforts. They distributed 1,000 Survival Kits which included 14 days worth of food and plastic for shelter. The camp mostly consisted of women and children with an estimated 5,000 residents in need.

Our team then drove 450 miles to Beira, Mozambique, a city which was 90% destroyed from the cyclone. The destruction left them speechless. The government has limited aid workers from visiting certain parts of Beira due to a cholera outbreak. Our team was given permission to visit Dondo, a town on the outskirts of Beira. Three weeks after the cyclone the town was at a standstill with depleted water sources and infrastructures.

In Dondo, another 1,000 people were given Survival Kits containing food and plastic which wasn't enough to supply the 2,200 who sought aid. Our team has requested HHRD supports to open their hearts in prayer and aid for the victims of Cyclone Idai. They are relying on the international community to provide relief.

Situation on The Ground:

The Pungue and Buzi rivers have overflown their banks wiping out entire villages in their path and leaving dead bodies in their wake. The country’s poor infrastructure has caused the extent of the damage done by the cyclone to come to light days after its arrival. Foreign governments and agencies have been requested to send aid and assistance. Please keep the people of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in your prayers.
