Burma Refugee Relief: Rohingya Refugees Flee For Their Lives

The recent surge of violence against the Rohingya minority in Myanmar has caused global concern as the death toll continues to rise. As many as 70,000 Rohingya refugees have fled the region in the last few months with hopes of finding safety in the neighboring countries of Bangladesh and Thailand.

The country of Myanmar (Burma) is located in Southeast Asia and has been marked by one of the longest running civil wars between ethnic groups. More importantly, 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims living in the Burmese State of Rakhine have faced apartheid like conditions since 1942.

An estimated 120,000 Rohingya are Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and are living in make shift homes throughout Saytmaji Camp, Sittwe, Burma.

HHRD emergency relief efforts began in the region following the riots in June 2012. Our "Burma Relief" operations assisted these refugees through our In Kind Gifts, Seasonal and Orphan Support Programs. HHRD has established a regional office in Yangon, the capitol city of Myanmar, where we continue to provide relief to those in need through our local partner NGOs: Share Mercy and Treasure Land Development Association (TLDA).
